Comment

The standard weight of a five sovereign was 1 177/623 troy ounce (616.4 grains). The pure gold content was 565 5/623 grains (36.6119 g).

This issue was a plain edge Proof only, struck in London. The odd 1 Matte Proof is thought to have been for the King himself.

Impaired and blemished proofs of the 1937 issue are common and trade at much lower values.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1937 George VI 5 Pound coin is that it was minted in a very small quantity, with only 21,000 coins produced. This scarcity makes it a highly sought-after collector's item among numismatists and coin collectors.
