Comment

The first of six sets of £5 coins issued between 2014 and 2018, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War. This issue was part of the 6-coin set released in 2014, remembering the Outbreak of The First World War and was also struck in silver proof.

Born in Folkestone, England on 28 April 1888, Walter Daniel John Tull was the first Afro-Caribbean/mixed heritage man to be commissioned into the British Army as an infantry officer. Mentioned in Dispatches in 1917 for “gallantry and coolness” while leading his company of 26 men on a raiding party into enemy territory while stationed in Italy, he returned to France in 1918, and was killed in action on 25 March, aged just 29, during the Spring Offensive; his body was never recovered. Before the war he was a professional footballer for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town, being only the second Afro-Caribbean player to play in the top division.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Walter Tull; Gold Proof 5 Pounds coin is that it features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a depiction of Walter Tull, a British Army officer and footballer who was one of the first black officers in the British Army, on the other. This coin was issued as part of a series commemorating the centenary of World War I and Tull's contributions to the war effort.
