Comment
Before World War II, the royal family zealously guarded the privacy of the young Princess Elizabeth, refusing requests for her to broadcast to the USA. However, in 1940, with Britain in desperate need of American goodwill, the King and Queen agreed that the 14-year-old should make a five-minute broadcast, ostensibly addressed to British evacuees in America, though intended to soften hearts and influence American adults. On 13th October 1940 the Princess's speech was broadcast live on the shortwave BBC World Service and recorded and
broadcast later in other countries. Reading from the carefully scripted text, she sympathised with those separated from home. "My sister Margaret Rose and I feel so much for you, as we know from experience what it means to be away from those we love most of all." Later she reassured her audience - "we know, every one of us, that in the end all will be well." She finished, "my sister is by my side and we are both going to say goodnight to you. Come on Margaret." "Goodnight" piped up Margaret. It went down very well in America and the BBC issued the speech as a gramophone record.
