On 2 August 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres, popularly known as Passchendaele, Chavasse was gravely wounded by shellfire but continued to care for other casualties. He was taken to a ‘Casualty Clearing Station’ where he died on 4 August, aged 32. For his bravery, Captain Chavasse was posthumously awarded a Bar to his Victoria Cross, the only man to receive this double honour during the First World War.The fourth of six sets of £5 coins issued between 2014 and 2018, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
