One of the Island's main tourist attractions is the Great Laxey Wheel, the largest surviving water wheel in Europe. This feat of engineering, with a circumference of 228ft, was designed by Manx engineer Robert Casement and was first powered up in 1854 to pump water from the neighbouring mine. It was christened Lady Isabella in honour of the wife of the island's Governor, Charles Hope.Interesting fact
The Laxey Wheel coin features a unique design that showcases the Isle of Man's rich history and culture. The coin's reverse side features an image of the Laxey Wheel, a historic waterwheel located in the village of Laxey, which was built in the 19th century to pump water from the mine shafts. The wheel is still operational today and is considered a symbol of the island's industrial heritage.
