Comment

The Falklands "war" began on April 1982, when the Argentine leader General Galtieri, ordered the invasion and occupation of the Islands. It ended when the Argentine farces surrendered on 14th June 1982. Although it was essentially a ground forces operation with strong navel support, carried out many thousands of miles from British air bases, the RAF in fact played a key role in the Falklands War. In the war Zone, RAF G.3 Harriers and pilots were prepared for carrier operation. Ten flew with the Navy, of which three were shot down by flak and one destroyed on landing. Vulcan B.2 bombers of 44.50 and 51 Squadrons flew from Ascension, refuelling in midair before attacking the airfield at Stanley, using conventional bombs and Shrike anti-radar missiles. Nimrod MR.1 (and later MR.2) Maritime Patrol Aircraft flew over 100 missions providing Search and Rescue support, radio links and coordination of midair refueling, Vulcan bombers also provided radar reconnaissance support.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Falklands War 1982; Silver Proof) 2008 from Guernsey coin is that it was issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War, also known as the Malvinas War, which was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982. The coin's design features an image of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a scene depicting soldiers landing on the Falkland Islands on the other. The coin's silver content and proof finish add to its collectibility and numismatic value.
