Comment

The success of operation Chastise depended not just on the right men and tactics, but also the right tools for the job. These were the Avro Lancaster Bomber and the "Bouncing Bomb". Roy Chadwick, Chief Designer for Avro, designed the Avro Lancaster . Born in 1893 at marsh Hall Farm near Widnes, Lancs, Chadwick designed almost all the aircraft produced by Avro. Barnes Neville Wallis designed designed the innovative 'bouncing bomb' The cylindrical bomb (or mine as it was referred to) weighed 4.2 tonnes (9,250 1b) and was designed to bounce over torpedo nets and sink to 30 ft before exploding against the dam wall. The Air Ministry formed 617 squadron under Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who drew on the most skilled and experienced crews in the RAF to build his team. They trained exhaustively around the reservoirs and lakes of Derbyshire, before carrying out the operation on the night of 16/17 May 1943. 19 Lancasters attacked the dams in the Ruhr valley. beaching the Mohne and Eder dams.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it commemorates the 65th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid, a daring World War II operation in which a squadron of British Lancaster bombers carried out a nighttime attack on several dams in Nazi Germany's Ruhr Valley, causing significant damage to the enemy's infrastructure and industrial capabilities. The coin's design features an image of the famous Dam Busters logo, along with the inscription "Dambusters Raid 1943-2008" and the name of the operation's leader, Wing Commander Guy Gibson.
