In 1942 the British and American allies began preparing for the invasion of German occupied Europe. In 1944 General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed commander of the invasion of Normandy, code-named Operation Overlord.
During the first day, 156,000 were landed involving 5,000 vessels, from landing craft to battleships, supported by 11, aircraft. Supplied via Mulberry artificial harbours, by 11th June 1944 over 326,000 troops, 50,000 vehicles and 100,000 tons of equipment had landed in Normandy.
