Comment
When Edward III arrived unannounced at the Tower of London one evening, he was shocked to find the gates unguarded, allowing him to enter freely without being challenged. The King subsequently decreed that the Tower’s gate must be locked between sunset and sunrise to secure the fortress from unwanted visitors, in a ritual that has taken place ever since that fateful December night in 1340. Known as the Ceremony of the Keys, the Chief Yeoman Warder performs the ritual of locking the Tower for the night, carrying a lantern and The Queen’s Key.The fourth and final coin in the 2019 Tower of London series, produced in association with Historic Royal Palaces. The coin was issued individually in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack (10,977 sales) as well as in tubes for third parties (5,498 sales). The design features the Tower of London mint mark on the reverse and was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort and gold.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique design on its reverse side, depicting the Ceremony of the Keys, which is a centuries-old tradition that takes place annually at the Tower of London. The ceremony involves the Lord Chamberlain handing over the keys to the Tower to the Constable of the Tower, symbolizing the transfer of responsibility for the security of the Tower. This design was created by artist Stephen Taylor and is the first time that this ceremony has been featured on a UK coin.
