The A4 class of steam locomotives were designed by Nigel Gresley. In 1938 the A4 Class 8P6F 4-6-2 No 4468 was built which was better known as Mallard. On the 3rd July 1938 Mallard, pulling 7 coaches weighing 243 tonnes gross, set out on a high speed braking trial. At Stoke Bank south of Grantham, Mallard set a new world record for a steam locomotive at 126 mph; a record that still stands. Struck by the Royal Mint, this £5 crown was designed to commemorate the Mallard locomotive and its speed record of 126 mph.Interesting fact
The Mallard speed record coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a depiction of a mallard duck in flight on the other. The coin commemorates the record-breaking speed of a mallard duck, which was recorded at 191.3 km/h (119.5 mph) in 1938. This coin is unique because it is a non-circulating coin, meaning it was not intended for general circulation and was instead produced for collectors. Additionally, the coin's design and theme are unique to Guernsey, making it a rare and interesting collector's item.
