Comment
In September 2019, Benjamin Diokno, the BSP Governor between 2019 and 2022, announced that due to the confusion between the ₱5 coin and the ₱1 coin, a new ₱5 coin will be released in December 2019, first presumed that the coin will be scallop shaped (like the 5 sentimo coin did between 1975 and 1982). Eventually, on 30 November 2019, the BSP announced that this coin will be nonagonal. This coin was finally released on 17 December 2019 along with the 20 piso coin.
This is the second nonagonal coin has ever been minted into circulation in Southeast Asia after the introduction Thai 5 baht coin with this shape, 45 years prior.
Interesting fact
The 5 Piso coin features the iconic Jeepney, a symbol of Philippine culture and transportation, on its reverse side. The Jeepney is a unique and colorful mode of transportation that originated from the Jeeps left behind by the US military after World War II. They have since been transformed and customized with vibrant designs and ornaments, becoming an integral part of the country's public transportation system. The inclusion of the Jeepney on the coin highlights the country's rich cultural heritage and its ability to adapt and transform over time.
