The engineer Robert Ardelt (* 1847, † 1925) opened a technical industrial office in Eberswalde in 1902, which was expanded into a machine factory in the following years. The company was called "Robert Ardelt & Söhne Maschinenfabrik" from 1904 and was renamed "Ardelt-Werke GmbH" in 1912, although it remained family-owned. Further branches were opened in Berlin, Hamburg and Düsseldorf. The offer included cranes, hoists, foundry equipment, steel constructions, etc., and Ardelt was also involved in the construction of the Niederfinow ship lift on the Oder-Havel Canal. In the 1930s, small motor locomotives and steam-powered slewing rail cranes were added, but these were only manufactured in small numbers.

Interesting fact

The 5 Pfennigs - Eberswalde (Ardeltwerke G.M.B.H) ND coin was minted during a time of economic turmoil in Germany, specifically during the hyperinflation period of the 1920s. The coin's low denomination and zinc composition were a result of the economic constraints of the time, as the government struggled to produce coins with more valuable materials. Despite its low value, the coin remains a fascinating piece of history and a testament to the resilience of the German people during a period of economic hardship.
