The ñandu (Rhea Americana) is the biggest bird of South America, similar but smaller to australian ostrich. From 1978 is prohibited to hunt this species, and there is a very successful reproduction program to increase number of animals, and also to production of meat (very low on fat and cholesterol), feathers, and even crystralline lens and cornea for medical uses.This coin is part of the series dedicated to native fauna.
