Comment
The famous monkey (Macaca Sylvanus) originates from the African Atlas mountains and was probably brought to Gibraltar 1000 yrs ago by the Moors. The candytuft (Iberis Gibraltarica) is the national flower of the Rock.To commemorate the smaller size of the 5 pence coin (18mm diameter), Pobjoy Mint produced also 5000 pieces of silver and 5000 pieces of gold coins, both in proof. In addition, 1000 pieces of piedford versions were struck in silver and in gold.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features the Barbary Macaque, a species of monkey that is native to Gibraltar and is considered an important symbol of the territory. The coin's design showcases the monkey in a naturalistic pose, surrounded by intricate details and textures that highlight the coin's gold finish. The use of the Barbary Macaque on the coin serves as a nod to the territory's unique wildlife and natural heritage.
