Comment
The famous monkey (Macaca Sylvanus) originates from the African Atlas mountains and was probably brought to Gibraltar 1000 yrs ago by the Moors. The candytuft (Iberis Gibraltarica) is the national flower of the Rock.To commemorate the smaller size of the 5 pence coin (18mm diameter), Pobjoy Mint produced also 5000 pieces of silver and 5000 pieces of gold coins, both in proof. In addition, 1000 pieces of piedford versions were struck in silver and in gold.
Interesting fact
The Barbary Macaque depicted on the coin is a species of monkey that is native to the Rock of Gibraltar, and it's the only wild monkey population in Europe.
