The famous monkey (Macaca sylvanus) originates from the African Atlas mountains and was probably brought to Gibraltar 1000 years ago by the moors. The candytuft (Iberis gibraltarica) is the national flower of the Rock.

The Barbary Macaque depicted on the coin is a species of monkey that is native to Gibraltar, and it's the only wild monkey population in Europe.
