The 2008 strike was released as part of the changeover from the Emblems of Britain to the Royal Shield design. The coin was also struck in copper-nickel, silver piedfort, gold proof and platinum proof. Issue limit: 10,000.

In 2011, Spink changed their reference number for this coin when the composition of the base metal strike changed to nickel plated steel:
Sp#D6 (2008-10)
Sp#D7 (2011-15)

In 2012, most coins were selectively plated with gold for the Queens Diamond Jubilee and so this silver proof edition was limited.

The 2015 strike was issued as part of the dual set to commemorate the change from the fourth portrait to the fifth and was also struck in copper-nickel, gold proof and platinum proof.
