Reverse

Design of the coin represents the 2 Kepler laws of movement of planets. The first law is depicted as a planet on an elliptic orbit. The Sun is not in center of it, but a bit aside (in focus of the ellipse). The 16 sectors of equal area represent the second law: for the areas are equal, it takes equal time for planet to pass them.

Interesting fact

The Johannes Kepler 5 Mark coin from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) features an image of Kepler's mother, Katharina, on the reverse side. This is a unique design choice, as most coins feature images of historical figures or important landmarks, but this coin chooses to highlight the mother of a famous scientist instead. This design decision was made to commemorate Kepler's 400th birthday and to emphasize the importance of family and upbringing in shaping a person's achievements.
