Comment

Mobutu Sese Seko became the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1965. In 1971 he renamed the country, Zaire, which name continued till he was overthrown in 1997 when the country reverted to its previous name and continues so.

Mobutu passed away in Morocco, 3 months after he was deposed in 1997.

Interesting fact

The 5 Makuta coin from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then known as Zaire) has an interesting design feature. On the reverse side of the coin, there is an image of a leopard, which is a symbol of strength and courage in many African cultures. This design was chosen to represent the country's rich wildlife and natural resources.
