Comment
2nd type for the 5 lira issued by the Provisional Government of Venice, following the decree of November 27, 1848, but certainly not minted until early 1849.The Republic of San Marco was a state created in Venice following the city's insurrection against the Austrian government on March 17, 1848.The two patriots Daniele Manin and Niccolò Tommaseo, who had been locked up in Austrian prisons, were freed and took charge of a new provisional government proclaimed on March 22, of which Daniele Manin became president.
The republic, which took its historic name from the Republic of Venice, was short-lived, Venice being reoccupied by the Austrian army on August 22, 1849, after 17 months of heroic resistance.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 5 Lire 1848 coin from the Republic of San Marco is that it features a unique design on its reverse side. Instead of showing the typical coat of arms or symbol of the Republic, it depicts a representation of the Lion of St. Mark, which is a symbol of Venice and its connection to the sea. This design choice was meant to highlight the maritime power and influence of the Republic of San Marco.
