The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Ferdinand I, the first monarch of the Third Bulgarian State, who ruled from 1887 to 1918. The portrait was designed by the famous Bulgarian artist, Ivan Mrkvička, who was also known for his work on other Bulgarian coins and banknotes.
