Comment
After the downfall of the Ottoman Empire and the loss of most outlying territories, the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923. As part of a series of far-reaching reforms intended to modernize the ailing former Empire, President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk abolished the usage of the Arabic alphabet (which was complicated and poorly suited for the unrelated and consonant-heavy Turkish language) and in 1929 a new, Latin-based alphabet was introduced. Because of this short window of time, few coins exist from the Republic of Turkey that still used the archaic Ottoman Turkish (Arabic) alphabet. This is one of them. This coin is dated according to the Rumi calendar and was issued in 1924 and 1925.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 5 Kuruş coin from Turkey made of Aluminium bronze is that it was produced during a time of significant economic and political change in the country. The coin was minted in 1924-1925, just a few years after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, and during a period of economic turmoil and hyperinflation. Despite these challenges, the coin remained in circulation for several years and is still considered a valuable collector's item today.
