Comment
The commemorative coin is dedicated to Sevastopol, the special-status city, which is honored as a hero city and is located in the north west of the Crimean peninsula, on the coast of the unique Sevastopol Bay. The city’s history dates back to the age of antiquity, represented by the ruins of Tauric Chersonese, the antique and Byzantine city. According to one of the versions, Kyiv Prince Volodymyr was baptized on the territory of present-day Chersonese (referred to as Korsun in the Ancient Rus sources), which makes it a sacred place for Ukrainian Orthodox Christianity. The Russian Federation treacherously occupied the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol in 2014. Ukraine and the international community have not recognized the forced annexation of Crimea and consider the peninsula as a temporarily occupied territory.Interesting fact
The coin features a unique design that showcases the city of Sevastopol's rich history and culture. On one side, the coin depicts a panoramic view of the city's historic center, including the famous Khersonesus Taurica ancient Greek colony, which was founded in the 5th century BCE. On the other side, the coin features an image of a ship, which represents Sevastopol's importance as a naval base and its role in the country's maritime history. The coin's bimetallic design, with a brass center surrounded by a copper-nickel ring, adds an extra layer of uniqueness to this already fascinating coin.
