The commemorative coin is dedicated to one of the oldest actively operating scientific, educational and cultural institutions of Ukraine. Therein for the first time the geographic coordinates of Kyiv were precisely determined, and in the period of 1845-1884, before the Greenwich Meridian was chosen as the zero-longitude reference line, the Kyiv Meridian passed thereat.Interesting fact
The Astronomical Observatory of Kyiv National University, which is featured on the coin, is one of the oldest and most prestigious astronomical institutions in Ukraine. It was founded in 1845 and has made significant contributions to the field of astronomy, including the discovery of several asteroids and comets.
