Comment

Queen Máxima celebrated her 50th birthday on 17 May 2021! In honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s special birthday, the Royal Dutch Mint has struck a special guilder coin on behalf of the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten.

Máxima Zorreguieta was born on 17 May 1971 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She grew up in Argentina and studied economics at the Universidad Católica Argentina. After she graduated, she went to New York, where she worked at various banks. In 1999 she met Prince Willem-Alexander in the Spanish city of Sevilla and they married in 2002. They have three daughters together: Princess Amalia, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane. When Prince Willem-Alexander acceded as King of the Netherlands in 2013, Máxima received the title Queen. In this role she represents the Royal Family on official occasions and fulfills many other social functions. On 17 May 2021 she turned 50 years old.

The obverse of the 5 guilder coin shows the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Máxima and the text “Koningin Máxima 50 jaar” (Queen Máxima 50 years). On the left, you see a laurel wreath, a symbol of celebration fitting the festive occasion. Furthermore, a row of diamonds is depicted to the right, emphasizing resilience and purity. The reverse shows the coat of arms of the Netherlands Antilles with the country designation, the denomination “5 G” (guilders) and the year 2021. Moreover, the staff of Mercury and the privy mark can also be seen here. The coin is delivered in a luxury case with Certificate of Authenticity (in Dutch).
