These coins were minted at the Monaco mint from 1837 to 1838 on new blanks using the Droz pendulum purchased from the Paris mint.

Despite the Treaty of Stupinigi and the annexationist behavior of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, Honoré V was in financial difficulties, with France refusing to pay him the indemnity of 4.5 million gold francs liquidated in 1815 (execution of the law of 1791). He relied on the Chapon brothers from Marseille to introduce taxes and monopolies, and entrusted his monetary workshop, re-established in the Palais, to Jean François Cabanis. The hostility of the Turin court and a U-turn by Louis Philippe's government led to the cessation of coinage.
