- Silver coins struck on the pagoda standard were authorised in July 1807. The coins were struck from silver obtained from Spanish dollars. In 1808 the dumpy style gold star pagoda was replaced by flat European style gold coins and this initial series of silver pagodas was re-designed to closer match the new gold pieces.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 5 Fanams coin from Madras Presidency (British India) is that it was minted during a time of great economic change in India. The coin was introduced in 1807-1808, a period when the British East India Company was facing financial difficulties and the Indian economy was experiencing rapid inflation. Despite these challenges, the 5 Fanams coin remained a widely used denomination and helped to facilitate trade and commerce in the region.
