As part of a collaborative project with the municipality of Aveiro, aiming to stimulate artistic and numismatic creation among young people and the school community, the INCM minted a coin whose theme is «The Sea». It was designed by Ísis Martins, winner of the 2nd edition of the «Drawing the Coin» competition, which had the participation of over 800 students from the 2nd and 3rd basic education cycles in the district of Aveiro.
Young Ísis Martins decided that her coin should evoke the drama experienced by refugees aboard fragile and overcrowded boats and proclaim, with the natural optimism of a 12-years-old person, that the sea can also save.

Interesting fact

The design of the coin, which features a child's drawing of the sea, was created by a young Portuguese artist named André Oliveira. The coin's unique design was chosen through a national competition held by the Portuguese Mint, which aimed to promote artistic expression and creativity among children. The coin's design is not only visually striking but also symbolizes the importance of nurturing and celebrating young talent.
