Since June 1, 1866, at the behest of the Ministry of War, the Italian Red Cross Rescue Squads have been subject to military discipline and aligned with hierarchy of ranks and uniform of the Italian Army. On June, 15 of the same year the soldiers of the Military Corps of the Italian Red Cross started playing an active role in the Third War of Independence and since then they have been ceaselessy providing the Armed Forces with medical assistance in times of peace, as well as in times of war and harsh international crisis. Through humanitarian missions they also provide aid and civil protection to countries and people affected by disasters.
