Comment

Ciudad Real was founded as "Villa Real" in 1255 by King Alfonso X el Sabio, in a place called Pozuelo de Don Gil, receiving the title of "Ciudad Real" in 1420, granted by Juan II. A monument in the Town Hall Square reminds the Wise King that, according to tradition, he ordered the construction of the primitive church on which today stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Prado, and of which only the Puerta del Perdón is preserved. The Cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of the Prado, Patroness of the city.
