In 2022, the U.S. Mint released the Negro Leagues Baseball $5 Gold Coin as part of the Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program. It celebrates the establishment of the Negro National League, the first successful, organized professional African American baseball league in the United States. The Mint struck $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half dollar clad coins with different designs as part of the program. The Negro National League was formed in 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri in response to African American baseball players being banned from the major leagues. Other leagues formed across the country. The leagues changed not only the game of baseball, but also the United States.
Surcharges in the amount of $35 for each $5 gold coin sold, $10 for each silver dollar sold, and $5 for each half dollar sold are authorized to be paid to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum for educational and outreach programs and exhibits.
Interesting fact
The Negro Leagues Baseball 5 Dollar coin, minted in 2022, is a unique piece of history. One fascinating fact about this coin is that it features the iconic Negro Leagues Baseball logo on its obverse (front side), which was designed by the renowned graphic designer and artist, Kadir Nelson. The logo depicts a stylized baseball player in motion, with the words "Negro Leagues Baseball" written above and below the player. This design not only pays homage to the rich history of African American baseball players but also serves as a symbol of their resilience and determination in the face of racial segregation and discrimination.
