Comment

The standard weight of this coin was 129 grains.

This coin and the 2½ dollar coin with the same design are the only incused coins in the United States. At the time, people didn't like the design and wrongly believed that they would carry germs. Few coins still exist with exceptional quality. Today, this design is recognized as an important step of the renewal in US minting and is more popular than the Liberty type.

These coins circulated in British Honduras (Belize) until 1933.

Interesting fact

The Indian Head $5 gold coin, also known as the "Indian Princess," features a unique design that was created by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. The coin's obverse (front) side depicts a Native American woman wearing a feathered headdress, while the reverse (back) side shows a bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows. Interestingly, the coin's design was originally intended to be used on a $2.50 gold coin, but it was ultimately decided that the design would be used on the $5 coin instead. This change in plans resulted in the $5 Indian Head coin being produced with a slightly larger diameter than the $2.50 coin, making it stand out among other coins in circulation at the time.
