Bison have fed Canada's aboriginal peoples for thousands of years. For young boys, taking part in the hunt for the first time was a milestone and a rite of passage. We can imagine their excitement as they listened to fascinating hunting stories, as well as their eagerness during the hours spent making arrows, an exercise in patience and discipline to master the essentials: a carefully crafted arrow, a focused mind, the eye to hit the target. Finally, nature gave the signal that the time had come. The boys, belly down, were about to experience their first hunt.The piece presents a magnificent picture of a buffalo hunt involving an unexpected event: the presence of a sacred white buffalo in the middle of the herd.
