The evolution of paper money over the past three centuries has required the development of a highly specialized art form and the ingenuity of human technology in the context of a changing economy. As soon as it opened in 1867, The Canadian Bank of Commerce issued a series of banknotes. Then, in 1888, it put into circulation another series of coloured banknotes in different denominations, an issue so reliable that the formula remained the same for almost 30 years.

The interesting fact about this coin is that the design of Saint George slaying the dragon is based on a famous painting by Canadian artist, Lawren Harris, which is part of the Royal Canadian Mint's "Art of the World" series.
