Comment
Expeditions to the poles were a perilous adventure and often a matter of life and death, but for Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), being first at the poles was a childhood dream and a matter of fame and honour. However, having heard that the American Robert E. Peary had reached the North Pole while he was preparing for the same conquest in 1909, Amundsen changed his plans and headed south instead. Racing against the Englishman Robert F. Scott to be first to reach the South Pole, Amundsen and his crew of four set out for the Antarctica on October 19, 1911. Their mission was accomplished on December 14, well ahead of Scott and his men who tragically froze to death in the Ross Ice Shelf on their way back.Interesting fact
