Did you know?
O Canada was first performed on June 24, 1880, almost 100 years to the day before it became our national anthem.
Composed by Calixa Lavallée, the tune spread like wildfire across Quebec. The French lyrics sung today are the original, written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.
The melody has never been altered, but several versions of the English text existed prior to 1980. The most recent change came in 2018 when, for the sake of gender parity, the lyrics "in all thy sons command" were replaced by "in all of us command".
