Killer whales are considered as real monsters of the oceans. They are 7 to 9 meters long and can weigh 6 tons. Although they prefer cooler waters and are therefore rarely found in tropical seas, these giants inhabit all oceans.Killer whales are carnivorous animals and have an energy consumption of about 290,000 kcal / day. In comparison, an average person requires about 2,700 kcal / day.
These mammals owe their second, less flattering name of killer whale to the whalers. It makes reference to the often brutal-looking hunting methods of these whales. It is easy to forget that the whalers themselves often proceed quite brutally.
However, orcas are not really that aggressive. In fact, they display a pronounced social behavior with a clear hierarchical structure. It was also found that different families use different dialects to communicate.
