Comment
In 1899, Georgina Pope was one of four nurses to volunteer and obtain the rank of lieutenant to accompany British troops to the Boer War in South Africa. This appointment marked a decisive turning point in the participation of Canadian women in military operations. It was the first time that women, who acted as nurses, were granted a military rank and salary. It was thanks to Georgina Pope and women like her that the Canadian Forces and all divisions of the service accepted women.Interesting fact
The interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design by Canadian artist Georgina Pope, which depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in a more relaxed and informal pose, unlike the traditional formal portraits used on most coins. This design was created to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
