Comment
This $5 sterling silver numismatic proof coin underscores the strong friendship between Canada and Japan with a magnificent landscape depicting the flora and fauna of both countries: a white-tailed deer with maple trees (Canada), accompanied by a shika deer and cherry trees (Japan). The Japanese character "Wa" reinforces the notion of harmony.A solid friendship through the decades- A unique double vintage (1929-2009) marks Canada's 80th anniversary in Japan.
The first Japanese immigrant arrived in Canada, in New Westminster, British Columbia, in 1877. As regular steamship services between Yokohama and Vancouver increased, so did the number of Japanese immigrants, leading Japan to establish a consulate in Vancouver.
As relations continued to develop, Japan founded a legation in Ottawa in 1928, while Canada opened a diplomatic mission in Tokyo in 1929 - the country's first diplomatic office in Asia! This year therefore marks Canada's 80th anniversary in Japan, an anniversary that is being celebrated with numerous events organized by various diplomatic and trade offices on both sides of the Pacific - a superb anniversary year that illustrates the plural interweaving of Canadian and Japanese cultures in a solid friendship.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was designed by Canadian artist, Joel Kimmel, and features a unique double-effigy design, with Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a traditional Japanese cherry blossom motif on the other, symbolizing the enduring friendship between Canada and Japan.
