The Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans) is a species of marlin endemic to the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the open ocean’s fastest, strongest predators and one of the most highly sought after game fishes. They are able to swim close to the surface of the water, or to dive to the great depths while it searches for food.Known for its long bill that grows from the front of its head, the Blue Marlin use this bill to stun their prey by slashing their heads in a side-to-side motion, knocking potential prey unconscious, and making it easier to catch.
Reaching weights of at least 1800 pounds (~820 kg) and lengths of more than 16 feet (~5 m), the Blue Marlin is one of the largest species of bony fishes. Because Blue Marlins undergo such an amazing transformation in size (from being nearly microscopic to being one of the largest open ocean predators), they eat a wide variety of prey throughout their lifetimes.
The size of their predators also increases as they grow, and adult Blue Marlin are not eaten by anything other than large open ocean shark species.
The coin has been produced in Blue Titanium to mimic their cobalt-blue body colour and it is also available in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel.
Interesting fact
The Blue Marlin coin is unique in that it features a color-changing design. When viewed from different angles, the blue marlin image on the coin appears to change color, creating a mesmerizing effect.
