Comment
This Silver Proof coin features the Kereru. The Kererū or New Zealand pigeon is the only pigeon endemic to the New Zealand mainland. A large conspicuous pigeon with distinctive noisy wingbeats, it is the only remaining New Zealand bird capable of swallowing large fruit, and so is an important seed disperser for native trees. The coin was issued individually in a capsule in a Green Flip Box. (1,000 copies)
It was also included in the 7 coin Proof Year Set. (1,364 copies)
A Copper-nickel version of the coin was also released. (See link)
Interesting fact
The 2001 New Zealand $5 Silver Proof Coin featuring the 4th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the Kereru (a native New Zealand bird) has a unique feature - it has a distinctive "proof" finish, which means that the coin was struck multiple times to create a highly detailed and mirror-like finish. This process gives the coin a frosted appearance, making it stand out from other coins.
