Comment

This coin features the Hamilton's frog which is a primitive frog native to New Zealand, one of only four extant species belonging to the family Leiopelmatidae. The male remains with the eggs to protect them and allows the tadpoles to climb onto his back where they are kept moist.

The coin was issued individually in a coincard. (1,999 copies)

It was also included in the 6 coin Uncirculated Year Set. (2,631 copies)

A Silver proof version of the coin was also released. (Not on Numista yet)

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 2008 New Zealand $5 coin featuring Elizabeth II (4th Portrait; Hamilton Frog) is that it was designed by a 17-year-old student, Emily Siddell, who won a nationwide competition held by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to create a new coin design. This coin was the first time a New Zealand coin had been designed by a member of the public.
