The Royal Australian Mint issued in 1996 a National Identity Masterpieces in Silver Proof $5 Dollars, Five Coin Set with reverse designs paying tribute to people and events that have had a major influence in making us uniquely Australian. This particular coin celebrates Tom Toberts.Tom Roberts (1856-1931) wanted art to be the perfect expression of time and place. Setting up camp in the open air, a number of men and women artists, including Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin gathered around Roberts. He dreamt of a great school of painting in Australia and determined to make painting outdoors the pivot for a new nationalism.
