Comment
In 1936, on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, Canadian doctor Norman Bethune (1890-1939) changed the face of military medicine forever. A hero was born.On the battlefields, Dr Bethune was stunned to find that three-quarters of the wounded were bleeding to death from wounds that were not fatal. He realized that precious time was being wasted transporting them to medical facilities, instead of doing the opposite: bringing care directly to the wounded.
So he began collecting blood from volunteer donors, and found a way to refrigerate it and transport it to the front lines, along with bandages and essential surgical instruments. His improvised ambulance worked wonders: Bethune and his small team performed up to a hundred transfusions a day, saving thousands of lives in the process.
The mobile blood transfusion service is just one of Dr. Bethune's many contributions to medical progress. It is even said to be the origin of the military field hospitals (abbreviated M.A.S.H.) that came into being during the Korean War.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2011 Canadian $5 Gold Coin (1/10 oz - Norman Bethune) is that it features a unique reverse design that honors the legacy of Dr. Norman Bethune, a Canadian medical pioneer and humanitarian who is widely regarded as the "Father of Modern Medicine in China." The coin's design depicts a stylized image of Dr. Bethune, along with a background pattern of medical symbols and a quote from his famous speech, "The world is my clinic." This coin was issued as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's "Canadian Medical Hall of Fame" series, which celebrates the achievements of outstanding Canadian medical professionals.
