The Singapore 1990 $5 coin was released on the 24 July 1990 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Singapore's Independence. This coin was listed as a circulating coin by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and was issued individually in a white plastic folder. The issue price in 1990 was S$5.60. Released simultaneously on the same date was a $10 silver-proof coin, a $250 gold-proof coin and a $500 platinum-proof coin. All coins bore the same design motif on the reverse. The Singapore Mint also reserved 70,000 of these coins for issue with the 1991 Uncirculated Coin Set. This was the first Singapore clad coin set to feature a $5 coin. The highest denomination coin for all previous clad coin sets was the $1 Periwinkle coin. The 1991 coin set was first released on the 29 October 1991 and issue price for each set was S$13.00.
On the reverse of the coin are the words 'One People One Nation One Singapore'. This is the title of the 1990 national song that reflected the multiculturalism and unity of the Singapore people. It was composed by jazz maestro Jeremy Monteiro and lyricist Jim Aichison, and during the Singapore 1990 National Day Parade (NDP), the song was recorded with the vocals of Faridah Ali, Jacintha Abisheganaden, Stephen Francis and Clement Chow. The title of the song became the motto of the celebrations.
