Benedictus XV: The pontificate of Benedictus XV (1914-1921) took place during World War I. During the years that the conflict lasted, the Church declared itself impartial and neutral. This Pope, who established diplomatic relations with different nations, is known as 'the good Samaritan of humanity'. He restored relations between the Holy See and the governments of France and England and promulgated a new Code of Canon Law in 1917.
