This coin was initially struck in 2008, but hyperinflation put off their release date until December of 2009, after the Third Won was introduced. Even so, due to the revaluation of the currency, the 5 chon pieces' value was so low it was basically irrelevant.

Interesting fact

The 5 Chon 97 coin from North Korea features the image of a magnolia flower on its obverse side, which is a symbol of the country's national flower.
