Carlos Finlay (1883-1915) was a Cuban physician who became famous for his studies identifying that the virus responsible for the yellow fever was spread by mosquitoes. The information proved particularly useful at limiting the disease during the construction of the Panama Canal.

Interesting fact

The 5 Centésimos coin was designed by Panamanian artist, José de la Vega, and features a depiction of a traditional Panamanian woman on the obverse side, while the reverse side features the Panamanian coat of arms.
