The 9 stars represent the 9 provinces of the country at that time (there are now 10).Since its separation from Colombia in 1903, Panama has used the United States Dollar. These coins have the same specifications as the United States 5 Cents and circulated alongside it.
Interesting fact
The 5 Centésimos coin from Panama features a unique design that showcases the country's rich cultural heritage. On one side of the coin, there is an image of a traditional Panamanian woman wearing a pollera, a traditional skirt made of cotton or silk that is worn during festivals and celebrations. The other side of the coin features a depiction of a Spanish galleon, which represents the country's history as a Spanish colony. This design was created by Panamanian artist, José Luis Sánchez, and it has been used on the 5 Centésimos coin since its introduction in 1996.
