The 5 Cents (Ningizimu Afrika) 2002 coin was part of a series of coins issued by the South African Reserve Bank to celebrate the country's transition to democracy. The coin features the image of a protea, which is the national flower of South Africa, and the words "Ningizimu Afrika" which means "We are building Africa" in isiXhosa, one of the official languages of South Africa. This coin was also the first coin to feature a black person on its obverse side, which was a significant step towards representing the diverse population of South Africa on its currency.
